- Aged 16 to 17 - increasing from £3.53 to £3.57
Changes To The New National Minimum Wage Rates From October 2010
From October 2010 the National Minimum Wage Rates will apply to 21 year olds and over, from it's current 22 year starting age.
The Low Pay Commission is a statutory body whose role is to advise the Government on the National Minimum Wage. The National Minimum Wage Rates were first introduced on 1st April 1999 so have been in place for then years now.
When it was first introduced there was widespread concern from employers that it would lead to widespread unemployment and wage inflation, but until this year unemployment had remained at relatively low levels.
The Chairman of the Low Pay Commission, George Bain said:
"We are pleased that the Government has now accepted our recommendation that 21 year olds should be entitled to the adult rate of the minimum wage. We have long believed that 21 was the appropriate age from which the adult rate should apply."
