Planning Your Relocation
We all know that moving house can be a stressful event. From saving a deposit, applying for a mortgage, putting your own house on the market and hoping for a sale to having to pack up the entire contents of your house into cardboard boxes. Moving house is stressful enough even when you are familiar with area to which you are moving. However, when you make the decision to relocate to a different area of the country this can bring even more anxieties and can, if you are not well prepared, take away from the enjoyment and excitement of starting a new chapter of your life in your new surroundings. This article looks at some of the reasons people relocate – through choice or otherwise – and how a bit of forward planning can lessen the stress and worry of doing so.
People relocate for a number of different reasons. If doing so through choice the decision to relocate may have been made because of a desire to move closer to family, to fulfil a wish to live by the sea, to move to an area where houses are cheaper or to move to an area with excellent schools. Unfortunately, it is often the case that people are forced to relocate to another area rather than making the decision of their own accord. This could be because there are very few jobs in the area they are currently living or because their spouse has secured a promotion at work which requires them to relocate to a different part of the country.
Planning and research can help make your relocation go smoothly. If you have a choice about the area to which you are relocating make sure you visit the area and find out about house prices, schools, amenities and any development plans which may affect the area over the coming years. Check the local commuter routes to ensure you can easily travel. If you don’t know anyone in the area, get to know people through your new job or by joining local community groups such as toddler groups, if you have young children, or sports clubs.
If you are relocating less because of a desire to and more because you are being required to because of a need to find work or because of a promotion, you should try and familiarise yourself with the area before you arrive and focus on the points that you can turn into positives. This could be things like making new friends, excelling in a new job, or putting your mark on a new property that is to become your home.
Relocating can often be a daunting time and is always a big step which is usually taken after much deliberation and consideration. Plan your move and research the area to which you are relocating to ensure that you feel as familiar as possible with the area when the moving day arrives and you settle down into your new home.
